Ave Maria is a planned town on former tomato fields east of Golden Gate Estates, founded in 2005 by Barron Collier Companies and Tom Monaghan's Ave Maria Foundation and opened in July 2007. It is the newest housing in Collier County: every roof went on after the 2007 Florida Building Code, most between 2007 and today, in concrete tile on the earlier villages and a mix of tile and shingle on the newer ones. The houses are on the town's own utility for water and sewer, on a grid of villages around the university and the oratory.
Being 25 miles inland, Ave Maria takes wind and rain rather than surge. Irma on September 10, 2017, tracked north past the town and took ridge tile and shingle tabs off roofs that were then only ten years old. Ian in 2022 did less here than on the coast.
