Roofing in Everglades City, FL

Everglades City was Collier County's first town and its original county seat, laid out by Barron Collier in 1923 on the Barron River at the edge of the Ten Thousand Islands. It is a small place: a few hundred homes, the 1920s bank and courthouse buildings, stilt houses and block homes from the 1950s through the 1980s, and the fishing village of Chokoloskee across the causeway on a Calusa shell mound. Roofs are metal and shingle almost everywhere, with tile on a handful of newer homes. Many houses are raised on pilings.

On September 10, 2017, Irma's landfall at Marco Island sent a nine-foot surge up Chokoloskee Bay into Everglades City. The road in was under water, the Chokoloskee bridge was impassable, and homes were left full of mud. Ian on September 28, 2022, brought surge again, and Milton in October 2024 put nearly five feet of water above ground at Chokoloskee. Roofs here have to survive wind with open water in every direction.

This site connects Everglades City homeowners with an independent local roofing contractor by phone. It does not perform the work.

Everglades City roofing, metal on raised houses

A roof repair here is usually a metal roof with a lifted panel or a rusted screw line, and salt does the damage between storms. After a named storm, the job is storm damage roofing with photos for a claim. An older shingle roof on a raised house is a roof replacement conversation, and metal is nearly always the answer this close to the Gulf.

Where to call in Everglades City

Everglades City is its own municipality, and permits go through the City of Everglades at City Hall on Copeland Avenue rather than through Collier County. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center of Everglades National Park sits at the south end of town; its new building opened in 2026 to replace structures destroyed by Irma and Ian.
