Vanderbilt Beach is the strip between the Gulf and Vanderbilt Lagoon at the west end of Vanderbilt Beach Road, with finger canals dredged in the 1960s and 1970s and single-family homes on them, plus the condominiums and hotels along Gulf Shore Drive. The original homes were one-story block with shingle or tile; many have been replaced by two- and three-story houses with concrete tile or metal, built to the current flood elevation.
On September 28, 2022, Ian's surge came over the beach and covered Vanderbilt Beach Road by mid-morning. The high-water line on the public restrooms at the beach access was measured above eleven feet. Ground floors, garages, and the lower levels of the beachfront resorts flooded, boats ended up in yards, and the Ritz-Carlton stayed closed for repairs.
